I'm tempted to write a short story or full length book called "The Homegeny". The other night I watched a documentary put together by a rag tag team of university students. It was called Wal-Town. They travelled through various Canadian cities/towns and examined the affects in communities when a Wal-Mart came to town.
I think there has been a trend where large retail and fast food outlets have been changing the landscape in many places. When travelling these days it seems that the first thing that you see are large strip malls with the same brand names. It's the first thing that strikes me.
I hope that the world does not get swallowed up by "sameness". It just wouldn't be as interesting. I hope that small local business and cultures retain their identity in Canada and the whole world.
